Description

NGC 5084 is a massive lenticular 12.21 Magnitude galaxy in the constellation of Virgo about 80 million light years from Earth and is about 200,000 light years across. Apprant size if 4'20" and 1'42".
It is one of the largest and most massive galaxies in the Virgo Supercluster and is a member of the NGC 5084 Group of galaxies, which is a member of the Virgo II Groups, a series of galaxies and galaxy clusters strung out from the southern edge of the Virgo Supercluster. The galaxy is seen nearly edge-on and features a warped disk with large quantities of HI gas extending along the disk, probably accumulated after multiple accretions of smaller galaxies and it has a very high rotational verlocity.

What drew my eye here cruising in Stellarium was PGC 46491 (B Mag 12.7) another active galaxy down the bottom of this view. PGC 46574 (B Mag 13.17) is centered.

Last night was a rare clear new moon special with good to fair seeing. I managed to get over around 5 1/2 hours on this with only one (!) bright satellite tattooed across an early sub that I cloned out. The final sub-frame rejection rate was less than 5 %!

All this and I got to bed a a reasonable hour. I does not get much better than that!
